Wet and not so wild...

Today has been one of those days. It's been raining since I woke up, typical British weather. My money came through and went straight back out again, as it always does these days. I can't remember the last time I bought something for myself, something non-essential that I just liked the look of. In fact I don't even really think about it anymore, I just can't afford to do it.

Hope I get back to work soon, I have no idea where next month's rent is going to come from. Terrifying really. Just can't seem to be able to motivate myself, even with this knowledge. On days like this I just feel so blank. Pfft. Self pity eh...

90's Nostalgia - Shudder to Think

It's fair to say that the 90's musically for me were fantastic. Virtually every band I hold close to my heart were at their peak during this decade as was my passion for music.

Going to see bands live was a regular occurence and no venue was too dingy, in fact the dingier the better and I have terrific memories of seeing such luminaries as Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Girls Against Boys and Boredoms to name but a few. Post-hardcore was my thing y'see.

One band I didn't get to see was the wondrous (and highly underrated) Shudder to Think, in fact I think by the time I really got into them the band had ground to a halt. This was just after they had released their sublime masterpiece Pony Express Record, an album that I found initially jarring but slowly and surely oozed it's way into my soul.

I rediscovered it the other day, at the bottom of a dusty box of cd's, stuck it on and fell in love all over again. To try and describe the album is futile, it doesn't sound like anything else out there, even now. I think that's why I enjoy it so much.

Above is a live version of No Rm. 9, Kentucky from the aforementioned album performed by Shudder to Think's hugely talented frontman Craig Wedren in 2007, just a taster of the delights to be savoured on this amazing album...1994, ah the memories...

CocoRosie - Hairnet Paradise

I love this! A bewitching offering from the lovely CocoRosie...

My Whole World Turns Misty Blue...

Last night was one of those nights...nothing on the box, the internet was boring, my dvd collection had nothing to offer, so I ended up watching The Mist. I'm not by any means a fan of the horror genre but this looked to go beyond mere splatter so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

Plus I have a fog fetish. Yes, really...and a Thomas Jane fetish but we won't go into that, however I'd be lying if I said these two factors didn't influence my decision. Heh.

Directed by Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption), The Mist is based on a novella by Stephen King and features a fantastic ensemble cast including Thomas Jane (shh), Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden and Jeffrey DeMunn.

Set in a small Maine community, our protagonist (Jane) and his young son head into town after a violent storm to pick up some supplies and swiftly find themselves trapped in the local supermarket with various locals and out-of-towners. An unearthly mist rapidly envelops the area. However, this is no ordinary fog, there be flesh-eating beasties within.

At this point the film could easily slip into autopilot, but The Mist is just as interested in what's going on inside the supermarket, as everyone's survival instinct kicks in, as what's going on outside, which makes for a fascinating, and often disturbing, ride. Kudos to Darabont for sticking to his gloriously downbeat ending too. Great performances all round and well worth a watch - 4/5

And so it begins...

I've tried this blog thing before only to lose interest days later, but this time will be different (hopefully)! I'll add my thoughts plus random pictures, vids and any miscellaneous crap that catches my eye on my internet travels.

Maybe me keeping a journal of this kind will help me keep my house in order (and my brain), maybe not. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say...
